Review of the movie the house with a clock in its walls

When I was younger, the powers of the magic 8-ball were mystifying letting me know that there was some other force out there guiding me. So does this movie, which is based on the book written by John Bellairs in 1973, shows that with determination, a well-placed chocolate chip cookie, and the help of magic even the weirdest of people can be the hero.

In this movie, one of the main characters is “ Lewis.” Who just recently became an orphan after losing his parents in an accident. He was sent to live with his mysterious Uncle “ Jonathan,” who has a strange affinity for clocks. Both Jonathan, who is just as odd as Lewis, and his witty well-worded neighbor “ Mrs. Zimmerman,” are practitioners of the mystic arts. However, with their dark secret that they keep from Lewis and the constant ticking of a clock and chimes from the bell that they cannot find nearly drives them all mad.

The film took place in the 1950’s which was no accident during this time in America just years after World War Two. When the main antagonist “ Isaac” was fighting in the war, he became lost in the “ Black Forest,” where he meets “ Azazel” a demon, who after Isaac makes a deal with gives him the blueprints for a clock. When “ Isaac” finally returns from the war he creates and hides this mysterious clock, which leads to his death and from what we saw the death of his wife. From our protagonist, Lewis who wants to fit in with the kids at school and particularly his friend “ Tarby.” Lewis after breaking his Uncle’s only rule took a book from a magically sealed cabinet and practices the dark blood magic found inside it and raised the villain, Isaac, from the grave. Who now wants to turn back time, with the magic clock that he had made before his death. However, when all three protagonists and a few delicious chocolate chip cookies; the indomitable Lews, the wise Mrs. Zimmerman, and the powerful Jonathan, must overcome their battles and come together to stop the sands of time from turning back.

My personal opinion of the movie I believe that it has a deeper meaning than just saving the day. I think that it shows that even if we have a troubled past like the loss, Mrs. Zimmerman and Lewis have, or how Uncle Jonathan ran away from home. We are all able to do great things. Also, I think it shows that we all don’t have to be “ cool” to be heroes that as long as we are true to ourselves, we can move mountains. A brief synopsis of the film and book. Ten-year-old “ Lewis,” moves to go live with his unique uncle in his creepy old house that has a mysterious ticking sound in the walls. He soon learns that his Uncle “ Jonathan,” and his witty neighbor, “ Mrs. Zimmerman,” are masters of witchcraft. When “ Lewis” awakens the dead, the house suddenly springs to life awaiting the return of their original master “ Isaac Izard,” almost revealing the secret world of witches and warlocks.
